What are Passkeys and why they are the future of authentication
Discover how Passkeys work and why Google, Apple, and Microsoft are betting on this technology to replace passwords.
Goodbye, passwords?
Imagine logging into your accounts without typing a password. Without remembering complex combinations. Without phishing risk. This is what Passkeys promise — and are already delivering.
What are Passkeys?
Passkeys are a modern form of authentication that replaces traditional passwords with cryptographic keys. When you create a Passkey:
- A private key is securely stored on your device
- A public key is sent to the service
- Login is done with biometrics (fingerprint or facial recognition) or device PIN
Why are Passkeys more secure?
Phishing resistant
Passkeys are bound to the specific domain of the site. If you land on a fake site, your Passkey simply won't work — protecting you automatically.
Cannot be leaked
The private key never leaves your device and is never shared with the service. Even if the site is hacked, your Passkey remains safe.
Unique by default
Each Passkey is automatically unique for each service, eliminating the password reuse problem.
Who already supports Passkeys?
Major companies have already adopted the technology:
- Google — Gmail, Google Workspace, YouTube
- Apple — iCloud, Apple ID
- Microsoft — Outlook, Xbox, Microsoft 365
- GitHub, PayPal, Amazon and many others
The future is passwordless
The FIDO Alliance, which includes Google, Apple, Microsoft and other tech giants, is working to make Passkeys the universal authentication standard. The transition has already begun — and OneckPass is ready to accompany you on this journey.
